BUOY, Water Search and Rescue App by Ella Balhoff
During natural disasters, federal aid can’t rescue everyone. Oftentimes, people must rely on their friends, family, or even strangers to rescue them from life-threatening situations. In the United States, 99.9% of search-and-rescue efforts are done by volunteers. Unfortunately, civilian rescue groups are disorganized and lack communication. Buoy is a search-and-rescue app that streamlines the connection of civilians to volunteers, civilian, or federal aid during water-related disasters—all in one place. With user data, Buoy provides real-time disaster updates, enables rescuers to efficiently respond to rescue requests, coordinates communication between rescue groups and “rescuees”, and supports offline rescue efforts.
